Nike's Air Max technology has an impressive pedigree. Invented by NASA scientist Mr. Marion Franklin Rudy, Air technology uses sacs filled with gases to cushion the impacts from jumps, cuts and other sharp movements. Rudy offered this innovation to over 20 companies, including adidas, before connecting with the visionary team at Nike - the only company he got a yes from. Air units were added to running shoes, like Nike's 1978 Tailwind. The Air Max 1 debuted almost a decade later, in 1987. Air Max 1's innovation was letting everyone see what was going on inside the shoe. Windows making the tech visible were a hit with everyone from athletes to the general public. Big aesthetic changes came to Air Max in 1995, 2006 and more recently, 2019, with the re-releases of the Air Max 95, Air Max 360 and the Air Max 720, respectively. Popular Air Max shoes include the Air Max 2 Light Atmos in Black/Bright Crimson and the Air Max 90 Reverse Duck Camo in Infrared/Black-Dark Sage-Baroque Brown. The Air Max line is so popular that there is a dedicated holiday, Air Max Day, that celebrates the shoe's initial release on March 26th, 1987.
