Founded in the 1960s in Beaverton, Oregon, Nike originally distributed shoes made by another company. This sports behemoth was also known by a different name: Blue Ribbon Sports. In 1972, co-founder Bill Bowerman produced a groundbreaking shoe with a waffle iron. Known as the Waffle Racing Flat or Moon Shoe, it had a textured sole designed to be lighter in weight. The idea was to help runners improve speed without sacrificing functionality. The waffle shoe was given to athletes for the 1972 Olympic Trials, and a legend was launched. In 1978, the brand took its current name, Nike. In 1980, they went public. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Nike's focus on technology helped them revolutionize gear in a variety of sports. Athletes famous for their skill in basketball, tennis, golf and other sports became faces of the brand. Today, Nike is known for its style as much as its athleticism. Shoes like the Air Force 1 have had major impact in the worlds of pop culture and fashion.
